No, they have not been bad dogs and sent to jail. They are happy dogs that decided to snuggle together in their soft sided crate to keep warm in the crazy weather that we have been having. Pickles is in the front, then Olivia, and Winston is sitting in the rear. Don't they look cozy?
Since we hardly ever have rain like this in California, here are some tips to help you and your Spaniels get through it.
1. Up to date ID Tag. I know that I am nagging. However many dogs seem to slip out during the rainy weather.
2. Stock up on chewies. While we love raw, meaty bones they are a little messy when the dogs are housebound. Here are some of the favorites around here: bully sticks, flossies, Himalayan chews and antlers. The dogs in this house really like the antlers with velvet on them.
3. Have extra food on hand. You never know what you may be up against. Same things for medications.
4. For the soggy dog smell I just got a new candle last week from The Queen Bee's Hive and I love it! It has everything that I think makes a candle great made of soy and paraffin wax, cotton wick, and 100% essential oils. All of this makes for a long lasting, clean burning candle that has a great scent all the way through.
5. Make sure that they are going outside to go potty. Some of the girls are a little stubborn on this and if they hold it too long they could end up with a bladder infection. Olivia and Winston are very good about using their pads. Pickles refuses, so for her it is long walks during the breaks in rain.
The pads that I use and love are PishPads they are washable and can be cut to size. I also love the Deluxe Underpad by Salk. I have been using and washing the same pads going on 4 years now.
6. Exercise. Get creative. Most people are amazed at how active our little dogs can be. And if they are not tired out from their normal routine, they can turn to behaviors that aren't so good. Pickles and Olivia have already discovered the tissue boxes and toilet paper. So in order to stay a step or two ahead, having them run up and down stairs is good.
Also if you have a treadmill for you, it can be used by your dogs too. The best way to learn to do this is with Sarah Johnson's DVD Pilates For Pooches. This is a great DVD to have on hand and use to exercise your dogs all year round. I have a few on hand, so I can send them to you.
7. And here is a shameless plug, get on the computer and look over the current Avon brochure at www.youravon.com/lizdickens. If you need a free shipping code let me know. This is one of the ways that I get the extra money to help with the rescue Cavaliers, so any purchase is appreciated. And Avon is not tested on animals.
